KUCHING: Sibu’s basketball teams proved their mettle on the court, clinching both the boys’ and girls’ titles at the 2025 Datuk Francis Harden Cup in a showcase of skill, resilience and heart last Wednesday.
In a nail-biting final at Mini Stadium Sri Aman, the Sibu boys’ team held off a spirited Miri side, sealing a 61-55 victory.
The match was a battle of endurance, with both teams trading baskets in a tense showdown.
However, when it mattered most, Sibu’s defensive resolve and unwavering composure saw them through, earning them the coveted championship.
The Sibu girls’ team delivered a statement performance, dominating Sarikei 44-24.
Their fierce defence and efficient scoring left little room for a comeback, securing them a well-earned victory.
Held from 30 March to 2 April, the tournament was more than just a competition – it was a platform for young talents to shine, and identify who will represent Sarawak at the National Basketball Championship in Penang this June.
Adding to the occasion, Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, Sarawak’s Education, Innovation and Talent Development Deputy Minister, had officiated the opening event of the championship.
As president of Sri Aman Division Basketball Association, he reinforced his commitment to the sport by presenting a RM30,000 cheque to help fund the event.
With teams coming from Kuching, Kota Samarahan, Serian, Sarikei, Sibu, Bintulu, Miri and Sri Aman, the tournament was a celebration of basketball’s unifying spirit, where the real victory lies in the passion and perseverance of these young athletes.
