SIBU: The Sibu Central Market will be closed to the public for two days on Tuesday (Feb 2) and Wednesday (Feb 3), says Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting.

He confirmed that a SMC staff working at the Sibu Central Market on field surveillance had been confirmed positive for Covid-19 on Monday (Feb 2).

“We have been informed that one of our staff working at Sibu Central Market has tested positive for Covid-19.

“In accordance with standard operating procedures (SOP) issued by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), it is mandatory for local authority staff (individuals who have close contact with infected staff and those who have experienced any symptoms related to Covid-19 and others) to undergo rT-PCR screening.”

He stressed that all conditions, instructions and SOPs from the Health Ministry (MOH) must be complied with to curb the spread of Covid-19.

“With this, SMC will also close its office premises on the ground floor of the Sibu Central Market multi-storey car park, and the Health and Public Services Section located on the 20th floor, Wisma Sanyan effective Feb 1 until further notice.

“However, critical public health services will continue to be given priority to carry out their duties.

“In this regard, MPS would like to once again seek the cooperation of the public in facing this difficult and challenging time.

“Please cooperate by adhering to proper public health protection guidelines, MPS public health requirements, and being careful at all times for the benefit of all.”

On that note, he explained that the closing of the Sibu Central Market was to give way to sanitation and decontamination work and Covid-19 screening activities.

“All hawkers operating in the Sibu Central Market must undergo Covid-19 screening immediately at the nearest government clinic or at the testing facility provided by the MOH at the Sarawak State Library Sibu Branch.”
