SIBU: The Persatuan Pencinta Seni Budaya Selinggar Matahari Sibu serves as a platform for preserving and learning the customs, culture, and values of the Iban community.

Sibu Rural District Council’s (SRDC) Standing Committee on Environment and Public Health chairman Kelvin Lau explained the name ‘Selinggar Matahari’ itself symbolises a ‘goddess’ and represents an iconic woman in the Iban community.

He said that there is much to be learned from the association, including the culture, customs, and noble values embodied and demonstrated by Selinggar Matahari.

“There is so much we can learn from Selinggar Matahari—not just in terms of her beauty, but also her wisdom, skills, and compassion,” he said.

He said this in his speech at the association’s Pre-Christmas Celebration, which is under the patronage of Veronica Belankat, wife of Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak Romeo Christopher Tegong at a renowned hotel here last night (Nov 29).

Lau, who is also the Chairman of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch, expressed hope that the association would continue to grow, as the customs, culture, and values of every community are crucial to preserving, appreciating, and teaching future generations.

Earlier, Persatuan Pencinta Seni Budaya Selinggar Matahari Sibu chairwoman Flora Jaya in her speech said the association was launched last year under the Women’s Wing of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Bawang Assan.

Flora encouraged people from all walks of life, not just women, to join the association in its mission to promote and empower Iban culture.

She also shared that the Pre-Christmas celebration serves as an annual fundraising event to support the association’s activities.
