MIRI: Nearly 1,000 pupils of various ethnic group from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Jalan Bintang braved the haze yesterday morning in order to take part in the closing of Merdeka month celebration.

Present at the celebration were Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting, the school’s headmaster Ahmad Othman and its Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) deputy chairman Iqbal Abdollah.

Ting, in his opening speech, expressed how impressed he was with the event as the pupils dressed up in various traditional attires.

“The school itself is very much a diverse community. Today’s programme shows exactly who we are as part of a diverse community in Malaysia,” he said, stressing that interactions among the various ethnic groups in the country was vital.

“Hence, inculcating the interaction among our youth at schools is very much lauded and important so that they will learn to appreciate the peace and harmony.”
