PADAWAN: Police have arrested a 26-year-old shopkeeper to facilitate investigations into an attack on a man at a coffee shop in Kota Sentosa last Friday.
The incident happened when the victim, aged 52, and his wife met with the suspect and his father-in-law at the premises purportedly to collect debts before the suspect allegedly called his friends to hit the victim using iron and wood.
Following the incident, the victim suffered injuries to his head and left hand. The victim’s car, a black Toyota Hilux, was also damaged in the incident.
District police chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan said the suspect was arrested by Padawan CID team around 3pm last Sunday.
“The suspect claimed he did not call the people to beat the victim and that he did not recognise the attackers.
“He also claimed that he did not owe the victim and only know the victim through grocery business.
“The suspect said the victim was beaten by customers drinking at the coffee shop, who were outraged by the way the victim spoke and acted aggressively,” he said.
Aidil added background checks found that the suspect had a past record under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property.
Meanwhile, witnesses at the scene said they saw about 10 unidentified men hitting the victim and his car using a stick in the incident.
The suspect is currently remanded to facilitate investigations under Section 324 and 427 of the Penal Code.
