KUCHING: Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers’ Association (Sheda) has embarked on a private initiative to assist in a recalibration programme for migrant construction workers in Sarawak.
The move is part of the association’s initiative to relieve the current shortage of workers in the construction industry.
Its president Augustine Wong Chung Ho said that the initiative was established to ensure that its members who needed to legalise their qualified migrant construction workers on matters such as expired work permits, expired passes, and to change employers could be fast-tracked and handled smoothly.
“Sheda will guide and educate its member companies and subcontractors on the proper submission processes and procedures for the purpose of recalibrating these workers.
“To date, with the help of the Immigration Department Sarawak, Sheda has successfully submitted a number of applications, followed by necessary interviews as required, all while adhering to strict processes and requirements of the relevant authorities,” he said in a statement yesterday (Oct 18).
Meanwhile, in anticipation of Sarawak gradually opening its economy, Sheda members and their subcontractors in need of approved permits or licences to employ new foreign construction workers are encouraged to apply for and obtain these permits so that members in need of new migrant construction workers can employ these workers when the border opens in the near future.
Sheda will, however, charge a nominal fee for any services rendered to fund the association’s secretariat expenditures depending on successful recalibration cases or applications for new licences.
