Growing up in a household where journalism held more significance than just a profession shaped my aspirations and ignited my ambition as a journalist.
My parents are esteemed former journalists whose names still hold great respect in the industry.
They served as my initial mentors and strongest supporters, instilling within me a profound appreciation for the art of storytelling.
However, living up to their remarkable achievements seemed like an overwhelming challenge.
Honestly, during my time at university, I was determined to pursue a career in journalism.
The weight of expectations, encompassing the need to match my parents’ legacy and meet their exceptionally high standards, loomed over me.
Yet, here I am, having recently surpassed their legacy by winning the A Samad Ismail Young Journalist Award at the Malaysia Press Institute-PETRONAS Malaysian Journalism Awards (HKM) 2023 — a milestone that signifies not only a personal triumph but also the commencement of a resolute journey.
My parents’ accomplishments served as both an inspiration and a benchmark.
As a child, I admired their unwavering dedication and passion towards their work.
As I embarked on my voyage within the same field, I remained cognizant of the lofty standards set before me.
Commencing as an intern at the New Sarawak Tribune, I immersed myself in the craft.
Although my initial assignments were modest, they served as crucial stepping stones that allowed me to refine my writing skills and cultivate my unique voice and style.
The early mornings and late nights were driven by a desire not only to honour my parents’ legacy but also to establish my place within journalism.
Receiving the esteemed A Samad Ismail Young Journalist Award was a moment of immense pride and reflection.
This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon young journalists under the age of 30 who exhibit exceptional talent, dedication, and impact on journalism.
When my name was announced, a wave of emotions washed over me — gratitude for the journey, pride in the recognition, and an overwhelming sense of fulfilment for surpassing a milestone that had long seemed aspirational.
The special report that led to this recognition delved into Sarawak’s potential and strategic direction in carbon trading.
The five-part series highlighted how Sarawak, with its abundant natural resources and strategic initiatives, is positioning itself as a leader in carbon trading.
Winning this award felt like the culmination of those efforts, validating the countless hours of research, interviews, and writing.
In surpassing my parents’ achievements, I am acutely aware that I stand on their shoulders.
Their guidance, unwavering support, and the examples they set have been instrumental in my success.
This victory serves as a tribute not only to my parents and the New Sarawak Tribune but also as a personal accomplishment.
I couldn’t have achieved it without the guidance, encouragement, and support from the New Sarawak Tribune’s editorial team, as well as my colleagues.
