KUCHING: Bowling legend Datuk Shalin Zulkifli and Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress secretary Maradona Chok Khong Yau have been invited as speakers for the ABAS-SSC-MSNS Basic Tenpin Bowling Course For School Teachers held at Megalanes Sarawak, Batu Kawa from Friday (Mar 31) until Sunday.
Amateur Tenpin Bowling Association of Sarawak (ABAS) vice-president and course coordinator Robert Lu Nam Min revealed that there are over 100 teachers who have signed up for the bowling instructor course, including 16 from the master instructor course conducted in 2019.
“We are extremely proud and honoured to have Shalin and Maradona as our speakers for the three-day teacher instructor course.
“In fact, Shalin came to assist us in the first bowling instructor course in 2018 where 118 teachers took part.
“She is a complete bowler and now is attached with the National Sports Council and heading the Malaysian Athletes Career and Education (MACE) Secretariat, also represents STORM products as a bowler and competes in the professional circuit in the United States.
“As for Maradona who comes from Sabah, he is a MTBC silver coach, Malaysia bowling team manager, and has 31 years of experience as a bowler and an official,” Lu said.
He added that the objectives of the course are to reboot, restart and reset teachers’ coaching ability after the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The programme was derailed for two and a half years and some of the teachers have either retired or have been transferred away.
“The 16 teachers from the master instructor course will be accorded and help us to teach the new teachers as well,” Lu said.
On Day 1, participants will be given an orientation and the introduction to tenpin bowling by Lu, with Maradona sharing the world bowling structure, followed by Lu and Angelo Koay explaining the ABAS-SSC-MSNS tenpin bowling development programme, and Shalin to speak on Malaysian Athletes Career and Education (MACE).
Talks on bowling etiquette and safety, understanding proper ball fit, injuries, types of cover stocks and dynamics, ball motion phases and lanes surface, benefit of warming up, and physical condition for bowling will be given on Day 2.
Basic drill exercises on the lanes and a playing session between participants and Shalin will be done on Saturday (today) as well.
Tomorrow (Day 3) will feature lane drill practice, a talk on the nation’s sports powerhouse and school bowling club programmes.
