KUCHING: Sarawak General Hospital has issued an urgent appeal for blood group O donations following the activation of its Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) on Friday for two critical cases.

The hospital reported that MTP, which is initiated only by medical specialists in life-threatening emergencies, was activated for two patients suffering from severe upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

“Both patients lost nearly two litres of blood and required extensive transfusion support,” the hospital’s blood bank said in a Facebook statement.

To manage these emergencies, the Blood Supply Laboratory provided over 60 blood bags, with a significant portion being blood group O.

“On average, the hospital uses nearly 80 blood bags daily, with group O being the most in demand,” the statement added.

The hospital is calling on individuals with blood group O, especially those due for donation, to visit the Sarawak General Hospital Blood Bank.

Donations are crucial to replenishing the supply and ensuring life-saving treatment for patients in need.
