KAPIT: Heavy and continuous downpour accompanied by a thunderstorm has affected Kapit town and its surrouning areas on late Thursday evening, causing inconvenience until early Friday morning.
Several housing areas and longhouses along Sungai Amang and its tributary, Sungai Selirik were suffused by flood water.
For the longhouse folks of Rumah Richard Engking, they were caught by surprise as the fast rising water submerged the access road to the main road at Jalan Selirik that left several of their vehicles immobile.
Meanwhile, other housing areas affected by the flood included at Taman Melatai that was located at the lower part of Sungai Selirik.
In the afternoon the fast receding flood water left trails of mess and debris. Longhouse folks with the assistance of the staff from the Kapit Fire and Rescue Services Department were carrying out the cleaning work to clear the longhouse compound of mud and debris.
The road along Jalan Selirik at the junction to Taman Pacific and at the junction of Tatai Kenyalang was also inundated by several feet of flood water that caused the stretch of road to be impassable by vehicles for several hours.
Over the past two weeks Kapit has experienced a dry weather where the water level of the mighty Rajang River is rather low. Despite the low water level, the transportation by express boat to Belaga from Kapit and vice versa continues as usual without interruption.
