NEW DELHI: At least seven people were reported killed and many injured in a hospital fire in India’s Tamil Nadu state on Thursday night.

The fire started due to an electrical short-circuit in the reception area on the ground floor and quickly spread to other floors of the four-storey hospital in Dindigul, about 430 kilometres from the state capital Chennai, local media reported.

“At least two persons were charred to death and three others were suffocated to death. Two more are suspected to have perished in the blaze that spread in the hospital,” a police officer was quoted as saying in a report on the Free Press Journal’s website.

About 20 people were injured in the incident and dozens of patients were transferred to another hospital for treatment. – Bernama
