Seven detained, probed for rioting

MIRI: The police here on Friday morning detained seven local men who were involved in a fight over a car belonging to one of the suspects, damaged in a fire recently.

Miri police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari said the incident occurred at wee hours of Friday, roughly around 4am in Taman Jelita, here.

He added, that all suspects aged between 19 and 34 were picked up by a team of Miri Criminal Investigation department (CID) in various locations in the city during Ops Cantas.

Police also seized weapons believed to have been used during the brawl, including two sharp machetes.

Initial investigations revealed that prior to the fight three of the suspects had confronted one of the men ensuing in a sudden commotion and then escalating into an intense argument.

One of the men was reported to have sustained bodily injuries.

The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting.
