KUCHING: The Public Works Department (PWD) should prepare, study and review its budget planning.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said through the budget planning study and review, the department will be able to prepare itself for the outcome-based budget, slated to be implemented next year.
“And this outcome-based budget will not be given based on our past budget expenditure, but on the projection of what we can do.
“For instance, PWD will need to set its clear goals, such as building 10,000 km of road in a certain year.
“And an allocation will be provided based on the goals being set by the department,” he said adding that in an upcoming meeting, he wants PWD to lay out how many kilometres of road can they complete this year, with the present capacity that it has.
“Then we see how we move forward and look at our performance. This is a new way of working — clear, goal-driven, and exciting — and we must all rise to the challenge,” he said in his speech during the PWD dinner ceremony in conjunction with its 2025 assembly at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching on Wednesday (Jan 15).
Uggah, who is Infrastructure and Port Development Minister, also hoped that most of the bridge projects, which are currently in works will be completed between the end of this year and early 2026, in addition with the coastal road network and second trunk road (STR) project.
“For instance, the travel time between Kuching and Miri will be shorter than before, because of the completion of these projects,” he added.
Also present during the ceremony were Deputy Ministers Datuk Aidel Lariwoo and Datuk Majang Renggi, and PWD Sarawak director Dr Cassidy Morris among others.
