Septuagenarian dies when car hits tree

SIBU: An elderly man was killed in a car crash near Kampung Bukit Bedai, Jalan Bawang Assan this morning.

The accident happened around 7.35am when the victim who was driving his car alone, swerved off the road and crashed onto a tree.

A spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the impact had reportedly caused the victim to be trapped in his seat.

Firemen from Sungai Merah station were promptly despatched to the scene, about 28km from the station, for extrication works.

Upon arriving, the team found that the victim was unconscious and he was removed from the vehicle with a spinal board.

The victim identified as Ahjon Sumbang @ Aju Sumbang, 70, was brought out of his car around 8.10am.

However, the victim was confirmed dead at the scene by paramedics and his body was handed over to the police for further action.

The team returned to their station after wrapping up the operation at 9am.
