SARATOK: The government will seek alternatives to manage the water gates in the Jelupang area to prevent flooding during heavy rain.
At the same time, Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri, stated that the area, particularly the main road leading to Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sungai Nyiar, would be upgraded under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP).
He said he would consult Betong Division Resident Richard Michael Abunawas to review ongoing projects that could be delayed slightly to prioritise the road project in Jelupang.
“At the same time, we are exploring other alternatives, such as reopening some previously closed tributaries or creating new pathways to ensure stagnant water can flow out smoothly,” he told reporters yesterday.
He made these remarks when asked about plans to address flooding in the Jelupang and Sungai Nyiar areas after officiating at the Land Compensation Cheque Presentation Ceremony for the Roban Phase Two Village Expansion Scheme (SPK) Project here yesterday.
For this purpose, he explained that further discussions would be held with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) to identify the causes of stagnant water after rainfall.
“Several longhouses are affected, and we will explore ways to release the stagnant water.
“Previously, during the paddy development project in the Jelupang area, many tributaries were closed.
“If they can be reopened, or if new water gates are built, it will prevent tidal water from entering residential areas and ensure a smooth flow of water in and out,” he added.
Also present were Betong Division Resident Richard Michael, Betong Division Land and Survey Superintendent Moris Nayup, and Saratok District Officer Muhammad Dino Amid.
