KANOWIT: A second temporary relief centre (PPS) has been opened to accommodate 20 residents, including two children, after floodwaters inundated two longhouses in Machan today (Jan 13).

A handout photo shows rescuers escorting residents to the Kanowit Sports Complex Hall PPS.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) Secretariat said that rescue agencies were dispatched to Rumah Leo Sg Lipus and Rumah Alice Jimmy following a distress call received around 11 am.

Upon arrival, rescuers found the road to Rumah Leo submerged, rendering it impassable for vehicles and forcing them to proceed on foot to reach the affected residents.

Floodwaters at both longhouses had risen up to two feet, necessitating evacuation due to rising water levels and safety concerns.

The 20 residents, comprising 13 families, were evacuated to the Kanowit Sports Complex Hall PPS, which was opened at 11.30 am.

The evacuees included seven adult men, 11 adult women, a boy, and a girl.

At the time of writing, two PPS have been established in Kanowit to accommodate 40 flood evacuees from 18 families.
