KUCHING: The first phase of the Project Pak Tambang (e-Sampan) has been completed, according to Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB).
In a press release, it said the project focuses on preserving the cultural heritage of Kuching’s Old Town and promoting environmental sustainability through the electrification of the city’s iconic perahu tambang.
“Initiated in middle of 2023, this project is led by the emerging robotics unit of the SEB’s Research and Development (R&D) division, in collaboration with local sampan operators who had been using the e-Sampan since October 2023.
“It is also aligns with Kuching North City Commission’s (DBKU) plans to revitalise the city’s river transportation.
“Over a 10 month trial period SEB demonstrated the technical feasibility of using an electric motor and battery in place of traditional petrol engine for the perahu tambang.
“The trial, which involved daily passengers, highlighted several benefits of the e-sampan, including smoother and quieter operation as well as the elimination of fuel odour,” it said.
SEB stated that the conversion from traditional petrol engine to electric motors has also reduced operational costs by over 80 per cent and lowered its carbon footprint.
“During the 10 month period, we also saw reductions in carbon emissions, air pollution, and noise levels.
“This aligns well with our visions to green the grid and electrify the fleet,” SEB added.
It stated that the second phase for the project is now ongoing, focusing on exploring and piloting charging solutions for the e-Sampan, with other promotional activities also planned.
