Search underway for Myanmar worker who fell into Sarawak River

KUCHING: A foreign worker has been reported missing after falling into the Sarawak River while crossing a bridge to a container ship early this morning (Dec 15).

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) identified the missing man as Win Kyaw Paik, 49, a Myanmar national employed as a ship worker.

According to a security guard at the terminal, the incident occurred at approximately 12.10am at Sejingkat Terminal, Jalan Bako, when the victim was seen falling into the river while crossing the bridge.

Firefighters from Tabuan Jaya station were promptly dispatched to the scene, about 14km away, after receiving a distress call at 12.56am.

Upon arrival, the team initiated a search and rescue (SAR) operation and searched around the ship for the victim.

At the time of reporting, the victim has yet to be found, and the SAR operation continues along the river and surrounding areas.
