KUCHING: More than 100 members of the scouting community came together to celebrate Bonfire Night at the state scouts’ headquarters here.
The gathering brought together veteran ex-commissioners, ex-scout council members, members of the BP Guild, current commissioners, council members, donors, and supporters.
Sarawak Scout Council president, Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom said it is essential to increase the community’s involvement to secure a financial future for the movement.
“The scout movement needs more support, financially and in terms of facilities, to continue our work with young people,” Mawan said in his speech read by deputy president Dato’ Mohamad Safri bin Datuk Haji Abdillah
He called on successful businesses with a history in scouting to give back to the movement that has shaped their early lives.
Mawan also conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to the donors for their unwavering support of the scouting movement, recognising their contributions as vital in advancing and enriching scouting activities.
“I hope that, with the continued support of generous donors, we can turn the area surrounding the Sarawak Scout Headquarters into a premier city camping and glamping site, catering to camping enthusiasts across the city and other districts.
“While we have made some progress, more resources are needed to bring this vision to life,” Mawan said.
He also announced the establishment of a new initiative, the Scouting Experience Fund, which aims to support the creation of new district scout councils and troops in areas where they have not been established.
Also in attendance were were vice presidents Kho Ik Teck and Mohadi Mobin, executive committee chairman Peter Chai Mui Seng, chief scout commissioner Capt. Zainuddin Tan Sri Hamdan, and Sarawak Scout Foundation Management Committee chairman Arthur Lee Cheng Chuan.
