SIBU: The SJK(C) Uk Daik here held a Chinese New Year celebration event at its hall with spectacular lions dance performance and presentation of angpow or red packets to more than 300 students yesterday.

Its school board management chairman Albert Lau Pek Kii was in attendance to launch the event. Also present was the school headmistress Wong Kiu Sieng.

Speaking at the event, Lau said the school could not hold this festive celebration the last two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Now, the pandemic has passed us. We are back to normal life.  In a school where most students are natives, we feel proud of this Chinese medium school.

“We have the ideology to promote Chinese culture among them and to let them know of our way of life.

“Learning is a process in happiness. It enriches our being. It opens our eyes to learning new things,” he enthused.

Meanwhile, Lau pointed out that under the guardian of the teachers, students are “growing like a seedling to become a matured tree as they grow and learn about the facts of life.”

Stating that the school has struggled out of low ebb, he was pleased to note that the academic results of students are improving.

Although the government has abolished the Primary Six Achievement Test (UPSR), he advised the students not to fall behind in learning so as to build a strong foundation for them to move on to secondary education.

“Our Chinese school is nearly a century old. Due to the change of time, our intake of Chinese students has dropped, but, following this, intake of native students has increased tremendously.

“As a new year begins, it opens us to another year of wishes. Let us shape up and take things seriously to open our next chapter of life,” Lau concluded.
