KUCHING: Esports is no longer just about competition; it is evolving as a platform to empower youth, drive technological advancements, and promote Sarawak on a global stage.
Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the Sarawak Esports Expo 2024 (SAREX24) reflects this evolution.
“What began as a local initiative has now transformed into a platform that attracts not only participants from across Sarawak and Malaysia but also international teams from Southeast Asia,” he said in a text speech read out by his deputy, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, at the event’s opening ceremony here last night (Dec 13).
“Esports is more than entertainment; it is an economic driver, a platform for education, and a tool for unity. It offers young people opportunities to compete while developing skills in technology, teamwork, and leadership,” he added.
As a state that values innovation, Sarawak is committed to nurturing the esports industry through initiatives like SAREX24, which empower youth, position Sarawak as a regional esports hub, and integrate esports into the state’s tourism and creative industry strategies to attract visitors and investments.
Abdul Karim, who also serves as the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, expressed optimism that SAREX could become a global brand with the support of all stakeholders.
“With continued support from all stakeholders, I envision this event evolving into one of the most prestigious esports expos in the world.
“To realize this vision, I am proud to announce that the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak will work closely with the Sarawak Esports Association to elevate SAREX into an official annual event under our state’s tourism calendar.
“Next year, we plan to raise the prize pool to RM100,000.00, a significant increase that will attract even more international teams and sponsors,” he added.
Abdul Karim encouraged all participants, partners, and attendees to take pride in their collective efforts to build the state’s esports future.
Also present at the event were the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Permanent Secretary, Datuk Sherrina Husaini.
