MIRI: Sarawak’s shipbuilding and ship repair sectors have made important contributions to the region’s economy, owing to the region’s topography of multiple rivers and coasts.
To fulfil international standards, the industry has developed to construct boats for offshore oil and gas operations in Sarawak.
Despite travel restrictions and lockdowns, the industry has exported vessels worth RM260 million in 2020, RM345 million in 2021, and RM339 million in 2022 to countries such as Australia, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates, demonstrating the high quality and technical capabilities of local shipbuilders.
The marine industry plays a crucial role in supporting Malaysia’s global trade, with 90% of world trade conducted through sea transport. 60 of Malaysia’s 100 shipyards are located in Sarawak, making it a vital growth area under the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 for Sarawak’s aspirations to become a high-income economy by 2030.
Speaking at the Marine Rating Training Ceremony 2023 held in Imperial Hotel, Miri, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan stressed the importance of keeping up with the latest technology and innovation to remain competitive. The government is committed to developing national technology through research and development and strengthening industrial sectors.
The event was attended by Ministry of International Trade, Industry, and Investment advisor Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais and Pelita Maslaut managing director Masni Amit.
