KUCHING: Sarawak has the lowest electricity tariff, according to Datuk Ibrahim Baki, Utility (Sarawak Energy and PETROS) Deputy Minister.
He highlighted that while electricity tariffs in West Malaysia are high, Sarawak’s tariff rate is competitively priced.
“I can’t disclose the exact figure. However, our electricity charges are the lowest in the region.
“Neither Sabah nor Peninsular Malaysia can match our rates,” he said when met by the press at his Aidilfitri Open House at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) today.
With Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) aiming to generate up to 10,000 megawatts (MW) by 2030, Ibrahim stated that increased energy production will enable Sarawak to export electricity to countries such as Brunei and Sabah.
Sarawak’s next objective is to export 1,000MW to Singapore by 2032 via a 700-kilometre submarine cable, and 190MW of power has already been supplied to West Kalimantan.
By generating more energy, he said, the state will have excess capacity to consider exporting to neighbouring countries.
“We’ve already exported to Kalimantan, and with the income generated, we can use the profits to benefit the people,” he added.
