KUCHING: The federal government has consented to align Sarawak’s pioneering carbon trading statute with forthcoming national legislation, positioning the state as a model for climate change and carbon economy policies.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak’s early enactment of laws governing Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) and greenhouse-gas reduction has become the primary reference for federal policymakers.

“We will cooperate with the federal government to facilitate carbon trading between our state and external buyers

“God-willing, the federal government has agreed to harmonise our legislation with their proposed bills to be tabled in Parliament.

“This endorsement confirms that our laws serve as a model for the nation,” he said.

He said this in his speech at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development (MUDENR) appreciation ceremony at a hotel here last night (Apr 25).

Abang Johari underlined the necessity of this coordination, noting that carbon trading must adhere to established international protocols and legal frameworks.

“Cooperation between Sarawak and the Federal Government is essential to ensure the implementation of a legal, efficient and sustainable carbon-trading system,” he added.
