SIBU: Sarawakian singer Alisa Spencer has taken the internet by storm, amassing an impressive 18,100 likes and 209 comments on her recent TikTok video.
The video showcases the reactions of popular Malaysian public figures to her new single, “Sayau,” and their excitement is palpable.
The track, a bold fusion of RnB with a unique blend of Iban and English, has left listeners mesmerised.
“This is your voice? This song is incredible with its mix of English and Iban. It sounds so fresh and vibrant,” said well-known Malaysian singer Stacy Anam in the video, clearly impressed by Alisa’s work.
Radio announcer and comedian Nabil Ahmad, described the song as having an international appeal, even comparing it to the style of renowned artist SZA.
Meanwhile, Mimifly was rendered speechless, showing her full support by stating she’s “rooting” for Alisa.
When contacted by Sarawak Tribune, Alisa shared her inspiration behind the song.
She wanted to create something truly unique—an Iban song with a modern twist that celebrates her heritage in a fresh, innovative way.
“I’m especially proud of the chorus and second verse, which are in Iban. The song starts in English, and when it transitions into the Iban chorus, it creates a stunning surprise for the listener. It’s something they won’t expect,” she said.
Her aim is clear: to elevate Iban music to the global stage.
“I’ve had people refer to me as ‘SZA Sarawak,’ which is both humbling and unexpected. It’s exciting to think my music might help bring Iban culture to the international scene,” she added.
Alisa’s much-anticipated new single, “Sayau” (which translates to “My Love” in English), will be available on Friday (Jan 24) at 8pm at all streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook.
