KUCHING: Sarawak Women’s Rugby is ready for its 15s debut, with head coach, Sylvia Alexander Lian, aiming to develop the team’s potential and revive interest in women’s rugby in Sarawak.
Sylvia expressed her gratitude to the Sarawak Rugby Union (SRU) for the trust and opportunity to lead the team in this historic event.
“Firstly, I’d like to thank the Sarawak Rugby Union for entrusting me with the role of head coach.
“On behalf of the women’s team, we are truly grateful for the chance to participate in this upcoming tournament.
“This is our first time sending a 15s team, and it’s an incredible opportunity for our Sarawak ladies to elevate their game and compete at a higher level,” she told Sarawak Tribune when contacted last night.
Sylvia is optimistic about the impact of this tournament, which she believes will provide a significant learning experience for both the players and coaches.
“It’s going to be an exciting weekend for the girls and coaches, as this is our first time in a 15s tournament,” she added.
The head coach also hopes that this debut will reignite interest among senior players, and help bring together former Sarawak women’s rugby players.
“We’re looking forward to reuniting many of our Sarawak ladies and drawing back their interest in the sport.
“This tournament will also give us the chance to gain experience in 15s, potentially open the door for more support, and develop future national players in 15s rugby,” Sylvia said.
The Sarawak women’s team will compete in the women’s category of the MSNS-KRS Rugby League from April 26 to July 7.
Additionally, the squad also features former national players, namely Cuthberta Entai, Josie Mavcellina Gone and Stancy Ling Enggan.
They will face ATM on April 26, UPNM Barbarians on May 3, Cobra Venom on May 10, and finish their league campaign against KL Tigers RFC on May 17.
