MIRI: The Sarawak government will procure modern agricultural machines for farmers organisations in the state, which will be available for rent to smallholders, particularly for rice cultivation.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said he has already discussed with Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, as part of efforts to assist smallholders.
“Since the land owned by smallholders is not that large, the farmers’ organisation can rent out these machines to the farmers.”
Abang Johari said this during the official launch of the Marudi Bridge here, today (Jan 17).
He went on to highlight how modern paddy harvesting machines would save time and boost efficiency in rice farming.
“I want to share with you about the automated machine in rice cultivation. With traditional methods, our backs hurt because we have to bend down constantly.
“But today, with these automated machines, rice cultivation can be completed in just one hour for a one-hectare area.
“This is not an exaggeration; it has already been done in Meradong and Gedong. If you have the time, visit these areas to see the machines in action.”
He said that the state wants to produce a new generation of modern farmers who are equipped with skills and expertise in operating such machinery.
“This machinery requires someone to operate it, preferably with an engineering background.”
Abang Johari also urged local communities to fully utilise available resources to ensure the state’s food security.
“If the land here is suitable for rice cultivation, then develop this sector. One day, we could become rice exporters.
“If India and Vietnam are unable to export rice, then we will have enough to sustain our population,” he said.
