BETONG: The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said tomorrow it will meet tomorrow in Kuching to discuss preparations for Sarawak to progress to Phase Two of the National Recovery Plan (PPN).

Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also SDMC chairman, said the meeting would discuss how Sarawak could be divided into zones for the move into the next phase of the plan.

“Our preparations will also include assessing the Covid-19 pandemic condition in every district,” he told reporters after attending a briefing on the progress of development projects in his Bukit Saban constituency at the Spaoh sub-district office here.

Uggah said that to move from one phase to the next, Sarawak would use the stipulated three threshold value indicators – namely the number of daily positive cases recorded, capacity of the  intensive care unit (ICU) beds and percentage of the population vaccinated.

“If our daily figures on positive cases continue to demonstrate a downward trend like in the past few days and today, we should be moving into Phase Two soon,” he said, referring to the daily new cases of Covid-19 in Sarawak.

For two consecutive days, the number of daily new cases of Covid-19 was below 300 in Sarawak. A total of 289 cases were reported today and 286 cases yesterday. The figure had dwindled from the 544 cases reported on July 1.

Uggah said the downward trend could be due to the implementation of the movement control which restricted the people’s movement and activities as well as the active vaccination programme in the state.

“But we cannot really be sure as we have yet to complete vaccinating our targeted 2.2 million people (in Sarawak),” he said.

He said that as of today, 1,612,213 million people in the state had been vaccinated, adding that they comprised 1,254,639 million or 61.4 percent who received their first dose and 357,574 or 17.5 percent, their second dose. – Bernama
