SIBU: The annual stipend of RM15,000 for students from households with a per capita income of RM1,500 per month or below is expected to include home or room rentals.

According to Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation, and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, the initiative under the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme (FTES) is for students studying at universities owned by the Sarawak government.

The Nangka assemblyman said discussions on this matter had been held with Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“We will look into how we can facilitate accommodation rental for students who need to rent a place to stay, as this is one of the most important needs for students to ensure they are more comfortable,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters following a visit by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to his house in conjunction with Hari Raya today.

“The proposal to build the dormitories has already been completed, and I will brief Abang Johari.

“He also asked me to brief him as soon as possible so that we can implement the necessary accommodation facilities for the students,” he said.

Also present were Utilities and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi and Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.
