KUCHING: Sarawak remains committed to the principles of federalism while steadfastly defending its rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg highlighted the state’s role as one of Malaysia’s founding partners in maintaining a balanced distribution of power between federal and state governments, while safeguarding Sarawak’s autonomy.
He stressed the importance of protecting Sarawak’s constitutional rights, not only for the well-being of its people but also for the state’s continued contribution to Malaysia’s prosperity.
“By defending the principles of the Federal Constitution and asserting our rights and responsibilities, Sarawak is securing its future and contributing to the collective growth of Malaysia,” he said.
He said this at a gala dinner held in conjunction with the opening of the Sabah and Sarawak Legal Year 2025 at a hotel on Friday.
He pointed out that Sarawak retains control over key areas such as land and natural resources, while national matters like defence and foreign policies remain under the federal government’s jurisdiction.
This arrangement, he explained, embodies the spirit of federalism, ensuring an equitable sharing of power between federal and state authorities to foster cooperative governance without domination by any party.
“The division of responsibilities between federal and state governments ensures that both levels of authority operate in harmony, achieving common objectives for the good of the nation,” he said.
He emphasised Sarawak’s vision of a federation built on unity in diversity, where each state’s unique strengths contribute to national success.
“Our commitment to sustainable development, renewable energy, and green initiatives aligns with Malaysia’s goal to become a global leader in these areas. By responsibly managing our resources and driving innovation, Sarawak aims to be a model of progress within the federation,” he added.
