KUCHING: Sarawak is poised to reach an unprecedented revenue milestone of RM20 billion next year, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said this projection reflects the state’s robust economic management and successful forays into new economic sectors.

“When I took over the administration in 2017, succeeding the late Tan Sri Adenan Satem, Sarawak’s revenue stood at only RM5 billion to RM6 billion.

“In just seven years, we have managed to increase that figure to around RM14 billion — far ahead of the other 11 states in Malaysia.

“With prudent economic management, we are optimistic about reaching RM20 billion in revenue,” he said during the Public Works Department (PWD) Gala Night at Imperial Hotel on Monday (Dec 9).

Abang Johari asserted that the achievement was not about boasting but demonstrating Sarawak’s capabilities.

He highlighted the importance of efficient state expenditure to secure Sarawak’s future, including initiatives such as the establishment of a Sovereign Wealth Fund, offering free education by 2026, and implementing a Public Service Remuneration Scheme (SSPA).

Additionally, Abang Johari commended Sarawak PWD for its pivotal role in advancing infrastructure development across the state.

He noted that projects such as the Pan Borneo Highway, bridges, and road networks have been instrumental in Sarawak’s progress.

“I am proud of this achievement, which boosts confidence in Sarawak PWD’s ability to carry out its duties professionally. It also serves as ‘leverage’ for me to argue with the federal government,” he said.

Looking ahead, Abang Johari who is Finance and New Economy Minister expressed optimism that Sarawak is set to embark on significant infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Tanjung Embang Deep Sea Port and a new Kuching International Airport.

“These mega projects will increase Sarawak PWD’s workload, requiring skilled engineers to ensure successful execution.

“Such initiatives are vital for Sarawak’s ambition to become a high-income state by 2030,” he added.

Also present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Minister of Food Industry, Commodity, and Regional Development Datuk Seri Stephen Rundi Utom, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Aidel Lariwoo, Sarawak PWD Director Dr Cassidy Morris and Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata.
