KUCHING: Sarawak’s acquisition of MASwings, which is currently in advanced negotiations, is expected to be concluded soon.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the state needs its own airline services, not just for passenger transport, but as a strategic investment.

“Most importantly, it is an investment to stimulate economic growth and related support services,” he said.

He said this during the grand parade in conjunction with Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar’s 78th official birthday celebration at the Padang Merdeka here this morning (Oct 12).

Abang Johari added plans for a new international airport in Kuching are currently under study.

“The new airport will be modelled after the Doha International Airport in Qatar, and will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

“This is in line with the goal of establishing it as a regional aviation hub,” he said.

Last month, Sarawak Tribune reported that Sarawak plans to launch its own airline by the end of this year to further enhance tourism in the region.

Abang Johari during the Night At The Museum event on Sept 21, said that by the end of the year, Sarawak may have its own airline which will bring tourists to the state.

The Sarawak government is currently negotiating to take over MASwings as an effort to lower travel costs during festive seasons and improve connectivity in the region.
