KUCHING: PBB vice-president Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is confident that Sarawak parliamentarians, especially from GPS, will choose correctly on a consensus, to resolve the nation’s current political conundrum.
The Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister said the 18 GPS MPs who met the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Tuesday were mature politically and would not be swayed easily.
“There is a possibility that there are quarters who are trying to attract GPS MPs to support them. But from what I can see, our representatives are mature and courteous.
“They will not be swayed with promises and other things,” he said on Tuesday during his visit to Florida, United States.
He was there on a mission to bring back prehistoric bones, which originated from Niah Caves, to Sarawak.
Abdul Karim said that GPS’ stand on the matter was clear, adding, “We want anyone who will form the government to listen to the demands from the people of Sarawak.”
This pertained to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) claims beside oil and gas royalty among others.
Sarawak, stressed Abdul Karim, would not be affected by the political jostling and would prioritise the state’s interest first and foremost.
“Whatever happened in Malaya will not affect (us) or bring problems to Sarawak. The state government is still running smoothly and calmly under GPS.
“What is important is that the state-federal relation in the future, whoever helms the federal government is crucial to the federal political situation,” he added.
The GPS government, he said, needed to establish a good relationship with the new federal government.
