KUCHING: The Sarawak-level Chinese New Year celebration is set to take place on the first day of the Chinese New Year at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) at 8.45am until 2pm, on Jan 29.
The Sarawak government will host the celebration and graced by Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, along with other dignitaries, will attend the open house.
According to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Hui Kian, also the minister-in-charge for the event, the celebration’s role is to promote harmony among Sarawak’s diverse communities.
“In conjunction with this Chinese New Year, we hope for prosperity, peace and unity across our communities.
“Even though 2025 may bring challenges, if we unite, we can turn those challenges into opportunities to learn and grow,” he said.
“Chinese New Year is a very busy time, so we’ve ensured the timing works for everyone.
“Come anytime before 2pm, but after that, many of us will head home to celebrate with our families.
“For those who cannot join us, you can watch it live from the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) on Facebook and YouTube,” he added.
The open house will feature traditional Chinese performances, including a lion dance by the Sarawak Wushu and Lion Dance Association and a special performance by the Oriental Chinese Orchestra.
Local singers like Valerie Thiam, Ng Chien Chien, Ivando, Roxy Ixzy and Hafizah will also perform at the open house.
Dr Sim also added a personal connection to the celebration.
“Don’t forget that our Premier also can sing “月亮代表我的心” (The Moon Represents My Heart), and that is the only Chinese song I know how to sing.
“So, we are very proud and grateful that in this Chinese New Year celebration, our local artists, and performers come together to perform for everyone.
“And the spirit of these performances truly matters,” he said.
