KUCHING: The appointment of Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar as Senate President is unquestionably a fitting decision.
In congratulating Wan Junaidi on his appointment, Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said he is indeed appropriate and well qualified for the job.
“His vast experiences as a lawyer, lawmaker and his ministerial duties will greatly help him in his new role.
“We are happy and proud that the Unity Government made this choice as Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is a strong partner in the government,” said Rentap, who is also Layar assemblyman.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister for Transport Datuk Henry Harry Jinep also said Wan Junaidi is the most qualified person to sit in the position considering his years of experience be it in politics or administration.
“He has vast exposure on the constitution especially on issues pertaining the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
“He has proven that and delivered what we have bargained for and he deserves that recognition. Congratulations to him,” said the Tasik Biru assemblyman.
Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Women chief Kho Teck Wan said the Federal Cabinet made a good decision on Wan Junaidi’s appointment as he is certainly well qualified.
“As a former law minister with decades of experience as a law maker, his appointment is very appropriate,” she said.
She added some of the recent but significant laws tabled by Wan Junaidi during his tenure as law minister included the anti-party hopping law, Constitution (Amendment) Act 2022 which involved the list of the states of the Federation in Clause 2 of Article 1; the definition of the Federation, the definition of Malaysia Day in Clause 2 of Article 160 and the indigenous races of Sarawak in Clause (6) (a) of Article 161A.
“I look forward to seeing more updates to our laws for the benefit of the people,” she said.
Meanwhile, Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) president Datuk Larry Sng said Wan Junaidi deserves the appointment.
“It is also a recognition by the government of the importance of the Borneo states, which is why this position is given to a Sarawakian,” said the Julau MP.
Wan Junaidi was sworn in as President of the Senate on Monday. He was earlier nominated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and seconded by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
