KUALA LUMPUR: The Sarawak Labour Ordinance (Amendment) Bill 2024, which was read by Human Resource Steven Sim Chee Keong and passed in the Dewan Rakyat sitting, marks a historic milestone in aligning the rights and protections of 1.4 million workers in Sarawak with those in Peninsular Malaysia under the Employment Act 1955 [Act 265].
The amendments are consistent with the provisions of the Employment Act 1955 and international standards.
Malaysia Trade Union Congress (MTUC) Sarawak president Zaidi Nasar expressed gratitude to the Sarawak Department of Labour and MTUC Sarawak affiliates for their unwavering support and cooperation throughout this process.
“The Sarawak Labour Ordinance (Amendment) Bill 2024 introduces several significant changes to improve worker protections.
“These include expanding coverage to all employees earning RM2,500 and below regardless of salary or job type, increasing maternity leave from 60 to 98 days, and granting 7 days of paternity leave, which was previously unavailable. Additionally, working hours have been reduced from 48 to 45 hours per week.
“The amendments also introduce new provisions for flexible working arrangements, set minimum standards for workers’ housing and facilities, and allow employees to file workplace discrimination complaints. These changes aim to enhance workers’ rights and ensure better working conditions across Sarawak.”
He hoped that these amendments will significantly benefit all workers in Sarawak and further strengthen their rights and protections.
“Thank you to all parties involved for their support and efforts in this endeavour.”
