KUCHING: The Sarawak Kabaddi Association is making strides in developing the sport at the grassroots level, with a strong emphasis on training students under 12 years old for early exposure to the game.
According to president Muttiah Pillai Sinnathambi, the association’s efforts have already begun at SK St Andrews since last year, and they are eager to expand the programme.
“We have started training students under 12 because we want them to gain early exposure to kabaddi.
“Currently, we are only operating in Kuching, but we plan to establish more development centres, including in Lundu and Serian.
“Our programme is already underway, and we are working closely with Serian and Siburan to assist with coaching and expand participation in schools across the districts,” said Muttiah.
The association also has plans to open a training centre in Samarahan and further increase the number of development centres in Kuching.
Looking ahead, the association is preparing to host the ‘Kejohanan Remaja Kebangsaan’ (National Youth Championship) in Sarawak.
Although still in the planning stage, Muttiah confirmed that the event will likely take place after mid-year.
“We are excited to host this prestigious tournament in Sarawak. In the past, our youth teams have consistently placed as either runners-up or third,” he said.
“This year, we are aiming to maintain that standard, but of course, our ultimate goal is to clinch the championship title.”
