KUCHING: The Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) has released the guidelines for akad nikah (marriage solemnisation ceremony) in Sarawak during Phase One of the movement control order under the National Recovery Plan.

MIS said akad nikah ceremonies for Muslim couples who had obtained approval could be held at the district Islamic religious offices or MIS premises.

Only eight persons, including the marriage solemniser and witness, are allowed to be present.

The guidelines are effective from July 1 or 20 Zulkaedah 1442H and would be amended from time to time.

“However, this is also subject to the capacity of the premises used. Those attending the marriage solemnisation ceremony are required to scan the MySejahtera QR Code and show their risk status to the staff at the registration counter in order to enter the premises.

“Only individuals with low-risk status, and with a body temperature that does not exceed 37.5ºC are permitted to attend,” MIS said on Wednesday (June 30).

Attendees are also required to wear face mask, use hand sanitizer, maintain physical distancing. Handshaking is not permitted.

They are also urged to follow the appointment time, and the duration of the ceremony should not exceed 20 minutes.

“Ceremonies such as exchanging of gifts, putting on rings between the bride and bridegroom are not allowed. The holding of feasts to celebrate the marriage solemnisation is also not allowed.

“Attendees must adhere to the guidelines set by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee, National Security Council, Ministry of Health and other authorities.”
