KUCHING: The Sarawak government is introducing a dedicated corridor as a proactive risk control measure to enhance public safety and mitigate potential gas explosion hazards.
In stating this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the initiative is part of the implementation of the Sarawak Gas Roadmap, which emphasises the need to establish buffer zones to prevent unwanted incidents.

He explained that the implementation of the dedicated corridor involves the gazetting of specific areas as safety zones.
Through this initiative, he said, data related to gas storage will be more strictly monitored, while industrial areas such as Samalaju will be designated as safety zones where residential developments and public facilities will not be permitted.
“We have a plan under the Sarawak Gas Roadmap. We have a special corridor that needs to be gazetted to ensure safety.
“This includes areas like Samalaju, which will be designated as a safety zone to prevent any risks of gas explosions,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after attending the Hari Raya Aidilfitri Open House hosted by the Political Secretary to Sarawak Premier, Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, at Dewan Hikmah, Petra Jaya, here today.
Abang Johari also said that the dedicated corridor is crucial for detecting and controlling potentially hazardous gases, particularly high-pressure gas.
“We have two types of gas. One is low-pressure gas, which is used in household pipelines and is not dangerous.
“But high-pressure gas is the one that is hazardous because its strong pressure can lead to unwanted incidents,” he added.
