KUCHING: The Sarawak General Operations Force (GOF) has arrested two individuals and seized RM2.7 million worth of fireworks and firecrackers during separate raids yesterday (Jan 20).
According to Sarawak GOF commander SAC Dr Che Ghazali Che Awang, the raids were conducted on premises suspected of being a storage hub for illicit fireworks and firecrackers.
“The first operation, carried out by the GOF 11th Battalion Intelligence Branch, took place at 12.05pm around Kuching.
“It led to the arrest of a 64-year-old man at the premises and the seizure of 597 boxes of fireworks and firecrackers – valued at RM2.14 million according to market price,” he said.
SAC Che Ghazali stated that the suspect and seizures were handed over to Padawan district police headquarters (IPD) for further action under Section 8 of the Explosive Act 1957.
Meanwhile, the second operation was carried out by the GOF 12th Battalion Intelligence Branch at 2pm around Miri.
“During the raid, the team arrested a 19-year-old man and seized 153 boxes of fireworks and firecrackers.
“The items are valued at RM550,800 based on market price,” he said.
The suspect and seizures were handed over to Miri IPD for further investigation under Section 8 and Section 11 of the Explosive Act 1957.
