SIBU: The Director-General of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad, has praised JBPM Sarawak for demonstrating excellent performance in the Firefighter Fitness Test (UKB).
He said that Sarawak JBPM successfully recorded a passing rate of 95.37 per cent in the UKB.
“Congratulations are also in order for the successful implementation of the Weight Management Intervention Programme (Wellness Hub), where I was informed that out of the 108 officers involved, 103 individuals – or 95.3 per cent – succeeded in reducing their weight,” he said.
He said this in his speech read by JBPM Deputy Director-General (Development) Othman Abdullah during the Excellent Service Award (APC) ceremony at the Tun Taib Chancellor Hall, University of Technology Sarawak, here on Monday (April 7).
However, he emphasised that performance still needs to be improved in two other departmental fitness tests – the Firefighting Tactical Skills Test (UKTK), which recorded a passing rate of 79.69 per cent, and the Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT), with a passing rate of 65.28 per cent.
“I would like to share the story of the best participant of the Wellness Hub from Pahang, PBK II Samsu Bahrin Abu Bakar, who successfully reduced his weight from 105 kg to 73 kg – his motivation and mindset are truly commendable,” he said.
Meanwhile, on JBPM, he stated that public service reform in Malaysia focuses on improving service delivery systems to be more efficient, effective, and responsive to the needs of the people.
“As such, our role is crucial in ensuring that fire and rescue services remain efficient, effective, and professional.
“The introduction of a new, more comprehensive remuneration system, SSPA, requires us to interpret service efficiency and productivity not just through statistics but also through ‘outcome and impact assessment’.
“That is why it is important for us to review our work and the action plans we have developed and implemented. We must reassess and improve all actions to achieve the best outcomes and impacts for the target group.”
He advised the department to set realistic and achievable goals.
This, he said, must align with the aspirations of the Minister of Local Government Development (KPKT) towards greater HEIGHTS – Humility, Ethics, Integrity, Gung-ho (passion for work), Hard Work, Teamwork, and Success.
“To ensure the success of this reform mission, full commitment is needed from top management down to the grassroots level, including mid-level and lower-ranking officers.
“After all, how can a crab teach its young to walk straight if it walks sideways itself?
“Therefore, everyone – from senior grades and mid-level grades to lower grades – must play their respective roles according to their capabilities and capacities,” he added.
At the programme, a total of 33 recipients were awarded the Fire Service Medal, 98 received the Excellent Service Award, and 10 were presented with the PBB Commendable Service Certificate.
“I have also been informed that today, we are celebrating 113 officers who have dedicated three decades of service to the fire and rescue department,” he added.
