KUCHING: Sarawak Energy has urged contractors to consult the utility provider before starting excavation works to prevent damage to underground cables and avoid power disruptions.

According to a press release, excavation works by a contractor involved in a public infrastructure project caused a power outage that affected several areas, including a hotel and residential properties near Kuching International Airport and Stampin.

The incident occurred on Jan 9 at 11.32 am, with partial supply restored by 11.45 am and full restoration completed by 12.48 pm.

Sarawak Energy regional manager for the Western Region Effendy Syaiful Abdullah stressed the importance of consulting the utility provider before any excavation activities.

“We have repeatedly reminded third-party contractors to consult us before starting any excavation works to identify underground cables.

Unfortunately, incidents like this continue to happen, causing unnecessary inconvenience and avoidable disruptions,” he said in the statement.

Effendy also highlighted the dangers of working near live electrical facilities, urging contractors to take necessary precautions.

“Live electrical facilities are dangerous, and contact with live cables can cause serious injuries or fatalities.

“We urge all contractors to ‘Call Before You Dig’ to locate underground cables. This prevents disruptions, damage, and ensures the safety of workers and the public,” he added.

Sarawak Energy warned that legal action would be taken against those responsible for damaging its facilities.

Contractors are advised to contact the utility’s 24/7 Customer Care Centre at 1-300-88-3111 or email customercare@sarawakenergy.com for technical advice on works near electrical infrastructure.
