SIBU: Sarawak’s development direction continues to draw international attention despite the looming challenge of tariff policy issues, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said Sarawak was recently approached by the Bank of America to share its development strategies and renewable energy initiatives with Fortune 500 companies in the United States (US), despite current concerns surrounding tariffs.

“In the context of this new economy, Sarawak has attracted attention, including from the management of the Bank of America.

“Although the issue of tariffs is still under discussion, they have met with me and invited me to share our state’s development vision with Fortune 500 companies under the auspices of the Bank of America.

“In fact, they themselves are sponsoring and arranging my visit to the United States for that purpose.

“This is proof of external confidence in Sarawak,” he said in his speech at the Hari Raya gathering for the Sibu Division last night.

Abang Johari also revealed that he has been invited to Brazil later this year to speak about Sarawak’s progress in the hydrogen economy, which is part of the state’s broader strategy to embrace renewable energy and sustainable development.

“Sarawak has taken the lead in adopting renewable energy, not only to support our economy but also to address the growing threat of climate change,” he said.

He pointed out that recent environmental changes – such as earthquakes in Myanmar and Thailand, countries that previously had no such occurrences – reflect the severity of climate change.

“While the world scrambles to deal with climate disruptions, Sarawak is taking proactive steps by developing clean energy as a long-term solution,” he said.

Abang Johari emphasised that the state is moving forward in its efforts to tackle climate change by introducing and harnessing renewable energy sources as a more sustainable alternative.
