KUCHING: The Sarawak Delta Geopark (SDGp) is on track to be inscribed as a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) by 2026.

Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Deputy Minister, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, said that efforts are progressing as planned, with all relevant agencies following a structured roadmap to secure the prestigious recognition.

“So far, the progress is on track. We are submitting the documents according to the roadmap we have. Insya-Allah, it can be done.

“And with the help of all of you in spreading the necessary information, it’s a team effort.

“Each and every one of us has a responsibility to contribute to the visibility of this geopark worldwide,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters during his Raya Aidilfitri 2025 Open House at Demak Baru here today.

Len emphasised the significance of this recognition, stating that Sarawak will have great potential to share with the world the unique treasures of the state.

“The geopark integrates four key aspects, which are geology, culture and social heritage, biodiversity, and tourism.

“We see great potential in Sarawak through this geopark, and it aligns with the government’s vision to promote the state as a leading tourism destination,” he said.

Len further highlighted that preparations for the UNESCO assessment are in full swing, with the meeting scheduled for next year.

He urged all relevant agencies, including the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), the Forest Department, the Museum Department, and all relevant agencies to strictly adhere to the roadmap.

“If we miss this opportunity, we will have to wait another two years.

“That is why I have instructed all parties involved to stay on course and ensure everything is in place,” he added.

He said that the Sarawak Delta Geopark journey began as early as 2009 but gained momentum in 2017.

“We revived it in 2017 when the Premier came into play. He understood the concept.

“So, from 2017, we had to fast-track the process. It has been a long journey,” said Len.

Earlier, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg attended Len’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri Open House, accompanied by Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
