KUCHING: The Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) extended support to 16-year old Ambrose Wee from Kuching, who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma.
According to SCCS, Ambrose was diagnosed with bone cancer at the age of ten in 2018.
“Ambrose’s battle began after a fall at school led to persistent pain and swelling in his leg. A visit to Timberland Medical Centre and subsequent scans revealed bone cancer, leading to immediate treatment at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

“He began chemotherapy in June 2018, completed active treatment by 2020, and underwent his first endoprosthesis operation to replace the cancerous bone in his right leg.
“In early 2024, Ambrose’s endoprosthesis broke, necessitating an urgent new implant. Supported by the Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS), Ambrose underwent a successful third surgery on 22 February 2024, at Sarawak Government Hospital,” it said.
SCCS said the RM35,000 procedure was crucial in preventing the amputation of his right leg, adding that Ambrose has completed his cancer treatment and is thriving in middle school while preparing for his Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam next year.
The society provided financial aid, organised celebrations and engaged in activities that brought joy during Ambrose’s treatment.
“Ambrose’s disciplined and positive attitude has been instrumental in his recovery. He diligently attended physiotherapy sessions and maintained an active lifestyle. Now, nearly fully recovered, Ambrose plans to return to school after the Gawai holiday,” it added.
Every year, SCCS supports about 150 to 200 families in Sarawak in their cancer-fighting journey, with their annual expenses rounding up to about RM2 million. As a non-profit organisation, the support services provided by SCCS are primarily funded through public donations raised from its Monthly Donation Programme, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects and annual campaigns such as GoBald.
The society said this year’s GoBald aims to raise RM1 million and shave 500 heads under the theme “Beacon of Hope,” highlighting the crucial role of community support in the recovery journey of children with cancer.
