SIBU: The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) must give special attention to preparedness in facing the risks associated with the use of alternative energy, says Malaysia Bomba director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad.
“We are well aware that the Sarawak government is currently committed to becoming a pioneer in the green hydrogen economy and aspires to establish the state as a hub for renewable energy.
“The development of mega projects such as multi-fuel stations (MFS), the Sarawak Hydrogen (H2) Hub, the Autonomous Rail Transit (ART) system, as well as the progressive growth of the oil and gas industry, requires Bomba’s serious attention.”
Nor Hisham said this in his text speech read by Bomba deputy director-general (development) Othman Abdullah during the Excellent Service Award (APC) ceremony at the Tun Taib Chancellor Hall, University of Technology Sarawak, here on Monday (April 7).
He stressed that the increasingly progressive industrial landscape demands that enforcement agencies adopt a more holistic approach to infrastructure development.
“This is to ensure that emergency response plans can be effectively implemented in the event of any incidents.”
On the ‘One Billion Readiness Initiatives’, he said that during his visit to Dubai to attend INTERSEC last January, a roundtable discussion was held, where 34 countries and 18 firefighting organisations, including Malaysia, agreed to commit to this global initiative.
“This collaborative initiative aims to reach 4.5 million participants through fire-related training programmes from 2025 to 2027, including 15,000 Community Education Programmes.
“Therefore, I hope Sarawak Bomba will give its full commitment to making this aspiration a success.”
