KUCHING: Sarawak and Switzerland are exploring potential collaboration in green energy initiatives, with a focus on bio-algae and hydrogen energy as key solutions for reducing carbon emissions.

A discussion, held yesterday during a courtesy visit by Swiss Ambassador to Malaysia, Her Excellency Chantal Moser, to the Sarawak Energy and Environmental Sustainability Deputy Minister, Datuk Dr Hazland Hipni, centred on policy frameworks and investment strategies to accelerate Sarawak’s transition to renewable energy.

Moser expressed Switzerland’s keen interest in Sarawak’s green energy initiatives, recognising the state’s progressive steps towards sustainability.

She views its efforts as an opportunity for meaningful cooperation in the clean energy sector, given Switzerland’s expertise in environmental conservation and renewable energy.

During the discussions, Dr Hazland highlighted Sarawak’s achievements in renewable energy development and the state’s long-term vision.

He credited the leadership and political stability under Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg as key factors that enable Sarawak to implement transformative environmental projects.

“Our leadership and political stability have played a crucial role in fostering these transformative projects,” said Dr Hazland.

“Sarawak remains steadfast in its commitment to renewable energy, and we believe that strategic partnerships, such as the one being explored with Switzerland, will further accelerate our green initiatives and contribute to the global sustainability agenda.”

The meeting also explored potential areas of collaboration, particularly in emerging technologies such as bio-algae and hydrogen energy.

Both parties acknowledged the potential of these sectors to significantly reduce carbon emissions and support Sarawak’s energy transition goals.

They also discussed the policy frameworks and investment strategies that Sarawak has implemented to encourage research and innovation in sustainable energy.
