KUCHING: When it comes to unity, Sarawak has an exemplary society comprising various ethnicities living in harmony and its citizens should be proud to show this to the world.

Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth chief Datuk Snowdan Lawan pointed this out in support of the National Unity Policy and National Unity Blueprint 2021-2030 launched by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Monday (Feb 15) to ensure that Malaysia remained strong with unity at its core.

“Here in Sarawak, we never doubt that unity is a prerequisite to stability — political or otherwise.

“All strata of our society have shown, subscribed to, and safeguarded it all along by practising tolerance,” he said when contacted today.

He said that in order to strengthen unity and national integration, the first objective of the National Unity Policy, all quarters and stakeholders should be rational and not only interpret issues or policies towards dominance.

“Families, schools, places of worship and institutional avenues should play greater roles to inculcate unity from a young age,” he said.

Snowdan said this would help in achieving the policy’s second objective, namely to form a national identity with character, patriotism, attitude of caring, tolerance, mutual respect and responsibility.

“Every citizen should be absorbed in the policy’s true spirit,” he said, adding that smaller communities should sense that their presence was felt as well.

“Multiracial we may be, but if tolerance is practised and bigotry put aside, we shall prosper,” said Snowdan, who is also Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports.

He said the Federal Constitution would remain as the binding social contract document while the Rukun Negara would act as guiding principles.
