KUCHING: All markets, including day, night, and weekend markets, in Samarahan have reopened with precautionary measures in place to curb the spread of Covid-19.
According to Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman Datuk Peter Minos, the markets had initially been a bit cautious about the reopening but are operating now in full swing.
“We from MPKS, especially our enforcement team, are helping with the use of face masks, social distancing, temperature taking of buyers, use of hand sanitiser, recording of names and contact numbers, and so on,” he told New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.
Based on his observations, all the people, including traders, were fully aware of the rules of the recovery movement control order (RMCO) and complied with precautions willingly as they knew of the dangers of Covid-19.
“A few were a little stubborn but after lectures from MPKS staff, they complied,” he said, also thanking the police for their assistance through their patrols.
Minos shared his experience of visiting a bakery in Kota Samarahan recently. He said it was very neat and clean. He was glad when a staff member explained the dangers of Covid-19 and the need for precautionary measures.
Earlier on June 17, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) announced that day, night, and weekend markets would be allowed to resume operations starting June 20.
Minos also revealed said that MPKS had recently constructed some 70 roadside stalls near the Samarahan Bridge to relocate stalls, which had been illegally lining the main road and posing a danger to commuters.
“Now, they are at the new MPKS stalls – happy and doing roaring business,” he said.
