KUCHING: The implementation of the Dual Language Programme (DLP) enables students to access information related to science and mathematics through good English proficiency.
Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said it will facilitate global learning, in line with the needs of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4.0).
“STEM education, particularly in the core subjects of science and mathematics at the primary school level, is crucial from various aspects.
“First, these subjects lay the foundation for critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Early exposure to science and mathematics fosters curiosity and innovation, equipping students with essential tools to understand and navigate the world around them.
“Early engagement is vital in developing a lifelong interest in STEM fields, which are seen as crucial to technological and scientific advancement, thereby driving the modern economy.”
Sagah said this during the closing ceremony of the Basic Training Course for the Year 5 Dual Language Programme (DLP) at the Grand Continental Hotel here, today.
He further stated that in Sarawak, the importance of STEM education is emphasised by the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
“Under the education and human capital cluster, one of the main targets is to achieve a 60 per cent enrollment in STEM and to nurture a workforce where 30 per cent possess high-level skills.
“These targets are designed to ensure that Sarawak can meet the demands of the rapidly changing global landscape and guarantee its socioeconomic progress.”
In this regard, the ministry assures to assist DLP teachers and students to ensure the sustainability of this programme.
“In addition to ensuring that all teachers undergo basic training courses, we also provide support materials to teachers and students by supplying Teacher’s Guides, Student Activity Books, and National Geographic Learning Materials.
“These resources are hoped to be effectively utilised by teachers and students to support teaching and learning.”
Meanwhile, he mentioned that the progress of DLP Sarawak is believed to be on the right track towards achieving the desired progress.
“Therefore, the ministry aims to implement standard assessments for the subjects involved, namely science, mathematics, and English, next year.
“To make this a success, it is important that both the Ministry and the State Education Department work closely together to ensure that the assessments are of high quality and something to be proud of,” Sagah added.
